What can be repaired

Fixing a concrete driveway can take several forms. The right one depends on what's failing, and on whether the slab is still in one piece and level.

ProblemUsual fixTypical cost
Thin cracksRout and fill with flexible sealant$2 to $5 per foot
Failed jointsClean out and reseal$2 to $4 per foot
Scaling surfaceBonded overlay and sealer$3 to $7 per sq ft
Broken edge or cornerSaw out and patch$300 to $900
One failed panelSaw out and repour$800 to $2,500

Find the cause before you fix it

A patch over a problem doesn't last. Cracks that run from a downspout usually mean water is washing out the base. A broken edge along the lawn often means the slab has no support there, and scaling near the garage door usually comes from road salt dripping off cars. If we fix the concrete and leave the cause, you'll be calling someone again in two years.

So we'll look at the gutters, the slope and the soil beside the slab as well as the damage. Often the most useful repair is rerouting a downspout. Our guide to driveway cracking explains the usual patterns.

When repair is the wrong answer

If more than a quarter of the slab needs work, or the surface is breaking up across most of the driveway, patches get expensive for what they buy. A driveway that's badly sunk needs its base fixed too. In that case, we'll give you the repair price and the replacement price side by side, so that you can decide. If it comes to that, see concrete driveway replacement.

Common questions

Can you coat a concrete driveway?

Yes. A thin overlay or sealer can freshen a sound slab. It won't fix a slab that's moving or sinking.

How do you repair a concrete slab?

Cut back to sound concrete, clean it, then fill with a patch or sealant that suits the damage. Fix the water problem as well.

Can you patch a concrete slab?

Yes, where the slab is sound. Patches stand out at first, and they do best at least an inch deep with clean, square edges.

Can you repair a broken concrete slab?

If a broken section is small, it's usually better to saw it out and pour a new panel than to try to glue it together.

Can you repair a concrete slab?

Many can be repaired. The real test is whether it's level and well supported. If it isn't, the repair won't last.

Can you repair a cracked concrete slab?

Yes. Thin cracks can be sealed to keep out water. Cracks that keep growing are a sign of a base problem.
